ENC Senior Coaches 2017/18

Now the excitement of the trials have died down we thought it would be a good opportunity to announce the fantastic coaching team we have lined up for next season. Drum roll please, introducing ENC’s coaching team for the 2017/18 season…

Gemma Sole – Onyx

I joined Edinburgh Netball Club aged 17 and grew to love the game as part of an unbeaten Royals ‘dream-team.’ I then went on to Bath University in 2009 where I continued to play netball in a competitive university environment. I trialled successfully for the Scottish Thistles. I went on to represent Team Scotland in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014, and at the Netball World Cup in 2015. I also represented Team Northumbria in the 2015/2016 in the Vitality Netball Superleague. And was Onyx coach 2016/2017.

Gail Niven – Royals

I’ve been involved in netball for 14 years playing, umpiring, secretary-ing, president-ing and coaching. I’ve been CENA President for the last 2 seasons. I’m a B umpire. When not doing anything netball related, I can be found in my boutique and fixing people’s fashion dilemmas! I love a good red wine, laughing and a cheeky dance from time to time! I am in a love / hate relationship with running and complete Marcothon month in December (which I will be trying to persuade my team to complete this year). I’m married to D who does not play netball #sadface.

Frances Youngson – Scarlets

I’ve been involved in netball as a player and umpire for past 15 years and then as a coach for the past 4/5 years. Started coaching an Under 17 team competing in CENA with a number of the original team still playing in senior teams in CENA. Been coaching seniors for the past few years running club training sessions and coaching one of the senior teams who have had great success moving from div 2 to div 1 and coming third in their first season. My coaching style is firm but fair though it also needs to be fun. Outside of netball I’m also a massive darts fan which people find quite surprising.

Kay Farquhar – Oceans

I play netball three nights a week, coach 6 days a week for clubs, primary schools, high schools, district and about to start coaching at development academy. I umpire and co ordinate the Play Netball league and umpire at CENA. In my spare time I run my guest houses. I love going to concerts and catching up with friends. I have two French bulldogs Olly and Lola. I have two older sisters and an older brother and a younger step sister.

We are super excited to have these four as part of our set up and with their knowledge and experience we cannot wait to see what they bring to the club! Bring on the 2017/18 season, see you on court!!

Senior Coaches for 2016/17 Season

Emma Cartmill
From Co. Down in Northern Ireland she studies International Business with Spanish at Heriot Watt University.
She started playing netball at primary school where she fell in love with the sport and has been playing ever since. She was selected for the regional development squads and then progressed to N.I. National Squads, competing at U17, U19 and U21 levels. She represented N.I at the U17 European Championships in Malta in 2013 and in the same year, was the youngest player selected for the U21 World Youth Championships in Glasgow, at just 16 years old.
Since going to Heriot Watt, their First team won the league with an unbeaten streak and gained promotion. She was awarded Fresher Performance of the Year at the Sports Ball and was recognised at the annual Blues Awards with full Blues colours for competing in the Scottish Student Sport Netball Squad. This summer she has been coaching in local primary schools which has allowed her to develop her coaching skills. She had enjoyed the experience which has fuelled her passion for the sport and is keen to share this with others.

Sarah Henry
She has played netball pretty much forever starting off in Derbyshire playing for Buxton and Derbyshire U18s. Her club teams since moving north of the border have been Bellahouston, ENC Onyx and currently Xonics. In the dim and distant past she has also played for Stirling University, Scottish and British Unis and Scotland. She has captained the Capitals for the last two years and is a great believer in the strength and depth of netball in the East of Scotland and wants to see it keep on developing. She is very excited about being part of the ENC set up again and is looking forward to seeing all the teams improve over the coming season. She’s still going to play for Xonics though!

Shelly Evans
She has played netball for ENC Onyx for the past five years, taking on the captaincy role for the past two seasons. She plays in defence (WD/GD) and started playing competitive netball at school when she was scouted to represent Wales at the age of 15!
At university she gained a lot of experience being part of the Welsh and British University squads while continuing to represent Wales at all ages through to senior level. Netball has given her many opportunities, meeting life long friends and travelling to some amazing places, that she otherwise would never have seen. She very passionate about raising the profile of netball in the UK, and would love to see the game receive the same exposure as in New Zealand and Australia. She believes Edinburgh has a wealth of talented players that deserve more support, opportunities and publicity. She is looking forward to this season and is excited to work with the ENC players to pass on some of her experience, skills and coaching.

We have taken on your feedback from last season and here are a few of the changes we are working on incorporating for the 2016/17 season, the details are still being worked on but here is what we hope to bring to you:

· The Club are firming up details for a move to the new Heriot Watt Oriam

· If everything goes smoothly with the Oriam move training will now be on a Tuesday evening for both Juniors and Seniors.

· Training times will be the same as previous seasons:

o Juniors training 7pm – 8pm on two courts and one court from 8pm – 8.30pm

o Seniors training 8pm – 10pm

· We have 4 exciting new coaches for the senior club – that’s one for every team!!!
